Dred Scott Case 

States Rights vs. Federal Authority

-the states wishes often clashed against the government on the issue over slavery


-the states believed they had a right to choose whether or not they wanted to allow  slavery, as long as it was based on the consent of the people or popular sovereignty, which could undermine  federal authority


-also a clash between the "Free Soilers" and the Democratic States, where the "Free Soilers" opposed the expansion of slavery, and the Democrats were pro-slavery


-the Free Soil Party consisted of anti-slavery politicians who were against the Democratic party, and was a party between 1848-1852
