-1860 elections were dominated by extreme debate over the Constitutionality of slavery, having been a supporter of slavery Buchanan gained support from the decision


-However, while Buchanan was pro-slavery, it was not enough for the country to be rallied behind him


-As violence was already incited through events such as Harpers Ferry and Bleeding Kansas, the shift into war was almost inevitable


-War breaks out in 1861, and as is evident now, war was the only way to solve the debate over slavery
